Vintage Motorcycles: Hildebrand & Wolfmüller

The World's First Motorcycle
The Hildebrand & Wolfmüller was the world's first mass-production two-wheeled motor vehicle to be dubbed a "motorcycle," or "motorrad" in German. After dabbling with steam power Henry and Wilhelm Hildebrand, along with partner Alois Wolfmüller, designed their revolutionary 1488cc Hildebrand & Wolfmüller, which was patented in 1894.

Although Gottlieb Daimler is credited with being the "Father of the Motorcycle," his Einspur "boneshaker" motor bike was actually a "hybrid" motor-driven bicycle with a wooden bicycle frame, and wooden wheels. Following on the neels of Daimler was the de Dion-Bouton, the Orient Aster, and the E. R. Thomas, all using a bicycle chassis.

The Hildebrand & Wolfmüller Motorcycle

Wolfmüller's patented design (Patent No. 78553, January, 20 1894) utilized an all metal hollow tube-frame that was revolutionary for the period. The power-plant was a horizontal (parallel) two-cylinder four-stroke 1488cc engine that was water-cooled.

The H&W had no clutch, and power was delivered to the rear wheel via locomotive-style pushrods which were linked directly to the engine's pistons. The solid rear wheel as a flywhell. The pushrods were returned by the force generated from two large rubber straps - one on each side of the motorcycle.

The H&W produced 2.5bhp at 240rpm, with an incredible top speed of close to 30mph! In total, several hundred Hildebrand & Wolfmüller motorcycles were sold, but fierce competition drove the company under in 1919.
The 'Motocyclette,' designed by Felix Millet, was introduced one year prior to the Hildebrand & Wolfmüller, that used an aviation-style radial five-cylinder engine, but Millet's Motocyclette never went into mass-production.

Sports endurance at its best

9 February 2013  www.thesundaily.my

Meet the limited edition GS 1200 Rallye, one of the most loved endurance bikes in the world.

GS - mention these two alphabets to any avid biker and there's a good chance that he or she has had experienced riding one.

There's also a very good chance that after the person is done singing praises, the topic would shift to other class bikes from KTM, Ducati, Yamaha, Kawasaki and Triumph.

That's because when it comes down to sport endurance bikes, BMW has stagnated with its GS. It has been around for a while now, allowing the competition to catch up and in some cases, even surpass BMW in terms of design and technology.

But that doesn't mean the GS is not a brilliant bike that's really good at what it was designed to do, it's just that buyers now have a lot of options. But when it comes to building endurance bikes there are only a few brands that have managed to perfect it, and one of it is BMW.

The GS series is highly popular not only because it is incredibly robust in any situation, but also because it is really easy to ride on tarmac and gravel as well as urban areas like cities and such.

A nimble frame combined to a torque-laden boxer engine makes the GS one of the best all-rounders in the market today, and that probably explains why it is one of the top selling endurance bikes

in the world. Good looks aside, the GS is also one of the easiest bikes to ride. The tall ride height may be a hindrance to the vertically challenged, but expectantly BMW has thought of that and there's a low seat option, though that would take a few months to deliver as it's not readily available in Malaysia.

The ride height does not mean that you are completely safe from scrapping the foot pegs, take a corner too fast at a low lean angle on uneven roads and you will have to deal with scrapping the pegs, something that could potentially be dangerous.

But there's a solution to it, and the bike you see here, the limited edition GS 1200 Rallye comes equipped with it, the Electronic Suspension Adjustment system, or ESA.

Featuring three different driving modes.

Police Ninjas to roll out

Officers with the Kawasaki Ninja 250 (STD) X motorcycles
New Straits Times 19.12.2012

KUALA LUMPUR: Housing areas in six states under the National Key Result Area (NKRA) initiative will soon be hearing the roar of motorcycles, thanks to 1,000 high-powered vehicles allocated to patrol these estates.
Federal Police NKRA Secretariat chief Datuk Wira Ayub Yaakob said the first batch of 560 Kawasaki Ninja 250 (STD) X machines would be deployed after its launch today.
"The motorcycle patrol units will monitor housing areas in six states under the NKRA initiative, namely the Federal Territories, Selangor, Johor, Perak, Penang and Kedah.
"The second batch will be rolled out early next year. If successful, this effort will be expanded nationwide," Ayub said during the rehearsal prior to the launch in Bandar Kinrara yesterday.
The RM20 million purchase was announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak during the unveiling of the 2013 Budget in September.
The patrol unit will comprise 50 officers and 950 men from police contingents in the six states. Five women were also among the 560 in the first batch.
Ayub said the police officers would patrol in teams of two.
